Statistical data: There were 504,544 enrolments by Full-fee paying international students in Australia on a student visa as at year-to-date (YTD) October 2013. The Higher Education sector was the largest by volume of enrolments and by volume of commencements at YTD October 2013. Enrolments increased slightly by 0.4% on YTD October 2012 figures and commencements increased by 8.2% in the same period. The VET sector accounted for 25.5% of total enrolments and 27.7% of total commencements. The Schools sector accounted for 3.5% of total enrolments and 3.1% of total commencements. The ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) sector accounted for 20.2% of total enrolments and 28.0% of total commencements. The Non-award sector (including study exchange and foundation programs) had enrolments and commencements growth of 11.2% and 11.4% respectively.
Most international students (80%) were engaged in Higher Education and VET courses in 2010, with some of these students having also studied English through an ELICOS provider. Management and Commerce was the largest broad field of education, with about half of enrolments (52%) and commencements (54%) in this field as reported by Australian Bureau of Statistics.

International Students preferred Universities and locations in Australia

Study by Bureau of Statistics, Australia reveals that international students are not equally distributed certain institutions having higher proportions of onshore international students than others. These differences are most likely due to the types of courses offered at different universities and VET institutions, with some catering to the needs of international students with specific international student programs. Along with quality education and course options, it is likely that international students consider other factors such as proximity to major cities and infrastructure when deciding where to study.

New South Wales Preferred Location

More international students studied in New South Wales than any other state or territory in 2010, with over one-third of all international student enrolments (37%) and commencements (39%) taking place in NSW, followed by Victoria (30% and 28% respectively).

Moonash University Preferred University

Larger numbers of international students can be found in Australia’s largest universities, with Monash University having both the highest number of domestic (40,300) and onshore international students in Australia (13,400), followed by the University of New South Wales (36,300 and 13,200 respectively).
