PAT SPG - Progressive Achievement Test in Written Spellings, Punctuation and Grammar
The Progressive Achievement Tests in Written Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (PAT-SPG) is developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to assess students’ understanding of the standard Australian English language conventions of grammar and punctuation especially in Australian Schools. PAT-SPG is a multiple-choice assessment focusing on the English Language.
PAT SPG: Purpose
PAT-SPG helps to measure student’s skills and understanding of English Language and also provides teachers, the information about students spelling, punctuation and grammar skills thereby enabling them to set realistic learning goals and strategies for the betterment of students.
PAT SPG: Format
PAT-SPG assessment contains multiple-choice questions in
- Written Spelling: Eight normed and graded tests that provide a comprehensive assessment of spelling; both through dictation and written text.
- Grammar and Punctuation: Seven normed and graded tests that provide a complete assessment of grammar and punctuation.
PAT SPG: Eligibility
Students from Grades 3 to 10 are eligible.
- PAT-SPG Written Spelling covers Year 2 to Year 10.
- PAT-SPG Grammar and Punctuation covers Year 3 to Year 10.
PAT SPG: Duration
Written Spelling - 20 minutes
Grammar and Punctuation- 30 minutes
The PAT-SPG central attribute is that it saves time in terms of marking, result reporting and other paper related work because it has online format i.e. the test as well as the results are delivered online. Another significant attribute of PAT-SPG is that it facilitates the teachers to spot out the weaknesses and the strong points of their students by the group and individual diagnostic reports received from the ACER. The teachers can compare the results and degree of accomplishment in English Language over time using the scores. It allows tracking progress from year to year.
PAT SPG: Registration
The registration can be completed online by submitting details about the number of students enrolled and other required information. ACER verifies the particulars of the school verifies it and allows the school o take the online test. All the necessary school details are posted on the website along with students unique username and password.
Punctuation and Grammar test is available online. While the Writing Spelling test is paper test, so students do not need username and password for that and give the Punctuation and Grammar test within the time duration given. Time of testing
Time of testing is a school decision, and purpose of the testing should guide when testing takes place.PAT - SPG Grammar and Punctuation
Norms for PAT-SPG Grammar and Punctuation were collected in March. Due to variation in the time of testing the results could be inflated e.g., if it is performed at the end of the school year results will be somewhat inflated as they have completed more schooling than the norm reference sample.PAT - SPG Written Spelling
Norms of PAT-Reading Written Spelling and PAT- Reading Spelling if collected at the same time in September then the results are appropriate. These results could be used as the starting point of next year’s teaching instructions by the teacher.
PAT-SPG Written Spelling covers Year 2 to Year 10. PAT-SPG Grammar and Punctuation covers Year 3 to Year 10. The PAT-SPG tests are recommended for the year level ranges below:

Scoring and Reporting
- Hand Scoring
PAT-SPG can be hand scored in the school using the instructions in the manual and the proforma spreadsheet on the CD. The spreadsheet creates a group diagnostic report which is useful for identifying strengths and weaknesses. There are also individual profile reports available as PDFs on the CD. These are filled in by hand.
- ACER Scoring
ACER Test Scoring and Analysis can also be used for arriving at the scores of PAT SPG. OMR Answer sheets are sent to ACER with an order form indicating which reports are required.
The PAT-SPG Specimen Set Costs around $ 247.99 which includes Year wise test booklets for both the sections of the test i.e., Written Spelling and Grammar & Punctuation. The OMR and Non-OMR Answer sheets are also attached with the set. The PAT-SPG Manual and CD is also available at a price of $129.94 and Separate test booklets too are available section-wise, provided the cost varies as per the year levels.
