PAT SPG: Progressive Achievement Test in Written Spellings, Punctuation and Grammar

The Progressive Achievement Tests in Written Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (PAT-SPG) is developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to assess students’ understanding of the standard Australian English language conventions of grammar and punctuation especially in Australian Schools. PAT-SPG is a multiple-choice assessment focusing on the English Language.

PAT SPG: Purpose

PAT-SPG helps to measure student’s skills and understanding of English Language and also provides teachers, the information about students spelling, punctuation and grammar skills thereby enabling them to set realistic learning goals and strategies for the betterment of students.

PAT SPG: Format

PAT-SPG assessment contains multiple-choice questions in
  • Written Spelling: Eight normed and graded tests that provide a comprehensive assessment of spelling; both through dictation and written text.
  • Grammar and Punctuation: Seven normed and graded tests that provide a complete assessment of grammar and punctuation.

PAT SPG: Eligibility

Students from Grades 3 to 10 are eligible.
  • PAT-SPG Written Spelling covers Year 2 to Year 10.
  • PAT-SPG Grammar and Punctuation covers Year 3 to Year 10.

PAT SPG Duration

Written Spelling - 20 minutes
Grammar and Punctuation- 30 minutes

PAT-SPG Attributes

The PAT-SPG central attribute is that it saves time in terms of marking, result reporting and other paper related work because it has online format i.e. the test as well as the results are delivered online. Another significant attribute of PAT-SPG is that it facilitates the teachers to spot out the weaknesses and the strong points of their students by the group and individual diagnostic reports received from the ACER. The teachers can compare the results and degree of accomplishment in English Language over time using the scores. It allows tracking progress from year to year.
  • Test 3 contains 30 questions – Year 2 or 3 or 4
  • Test 4 contains 30 questions – Year 3 or 4 or 5
  • Test 5 contains 30 questions – Year 4 or 5 or 6
  • Test 6 contains 30 questions – Year 5 or 6 or 7
  • Test 7 contains 30 questions – Year 6 or 7 or 8
  • Test 8 contains 30 questions – Year 7 or 8 or 9
  • Test 9 contains 30 questions – Year 8 or 9 or 10
  • Test 10 contains 30 questions – Year 9 or 10
Grammar and Punctuation covers Year 3 to Year 10 and requires 30 minutes of testing time plus approximately 15 minutes administration time.

  • Test 5 contains 35 questions – Year 4 or 5 or 6
  • Test 6 contains 35 questions – Year 5 or 6 or 7

  • Test 9 contains 35 questions – Year 8 or 9 or 10
